Steam client and server updates for CS:S

New postby {xvc}Djrouge » Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:38 pm

For some reason, when a substantial update for CS:S is released, well for the past two I have witnessed, it has normally been around 11pm ish UK time and at the end of a map just as we are waiting for the next one eagrely chomping at the bit, we received the message - 'steam server shutting down'
Shit.. What's going on? Well, it seems the connection to Steam servers have shut down their end after I quickly check our game servers only to find they were still pinging and showing up in my server monitoring software.

Anyway, I'll get to the point, we have received a steam update which amongst other things has made a change to the physics and detail of smoke grenades.

Once everyone had left last night, I decided to go back in and test in once I had updated and rebooted all of our game servers.

The server became really busy very quickly as most of the servers out there were causing a version mis match due to the clients being updated and the servers not so.

The first thing you notice is that when the smoke grenade goes off, it populates thick smoke instantly rather than gradually, when you walk through it, you enter into much denser smoke and any lights are showed as blurred entities in the distance which I think looks great.

Personally, I think that this is going to be a nice feature so long as Baz don't sit at T-Spawn in office buying as many as he can throw with full money and 90 seconds buy time ;)

The only thing I have noticed, unless they have fixed it in a recent update I am unaware of is that although you are near on completely blind inside the belching smoke, you can see the actual grenades canister on the floor as if it was in perfect view.
Not sure if intended but I couldn't help but notice a few LOL's about it last night.

Check out the smokes tonight and tell us what you think!

As lastnight really, the cloud is much more realistic but the way it baloons out to its size and then stays that size is crap, they really need to rework that..

I think he probably will mate.
His new name will be 'Barry the Smoke' rather than 'Barry the Flash'

Speaking of flash, have they increased the blind time?

Not sure mate but during our practice match tonight I received some flashes against me but not sure if they lasted longer tbh.

It could well be that they have increased the flash effect.. I need to set up the steam update rss feed to the website.

Cheers,
Dj
